Regularly visiting a dentist can do much more than you imagine for yourself. In addition to helping you to have a beautiful smile, you manage to control or avoid many discomforts and diseases that can lead to important problems for your oral and general health.

Taking care of your oral hygiene is essential to achieve good oral health and also a first preventive barrier against diseases that can affect the entire body.

Factors that affect your oral health

The mouth consists of teeth, gums, mucus membranes, salivary glands and bone. The mouth is the gateway to the rest of the body of nutrients, bacteria, viruses and fungus. It is part of the immune system and plays an important role in primary care. Taking care of the oral cavity and maintaining good oral hygiene is part of good overall health.

There is a relationship between oral health and overall health as you have no idea!

  • Tobacco: Tobacco is the main risk factor for oral cancer, as well as being behind many other cancers and health problems.
  • Alcohol: Alcohol favors the appearance of oral cancer, in addition to being behind many other problems and diseases.
  • Sugary drinks: Sugary and carbonated drinks increase the risk of tooth cavities and erosion because they increase the acidity of your mouth.
  • Piercings: Piercings are another risk factor for oral health to take into account since they can erode the teeth, expose them to trauma and damage or cause pathologies in the soft tissues.

Synonyms that you do NOT have good oral health

  • Inflamed or bloody gums
  • Tooth pain
  • Tartar accumulation
  • Changes in your tongue

Maintain a healthy mouth, to feel healthy.

One of the most important things that each of us can do for our teeth and gums is to maintain proper oral hygiene. As we’ve mentioned before, good oral health is essential to our overall well-being.

Daily care helps good oral health and prevent painful subsequent problems by paralyzing or preventing possible infections:

  • Brush your teeth thoroughly at least 3 times a day, after each meal.
  • Floss to remove food waste that has been left between your teeth even after brushing.
  • Use fluoride dental products, and remember to use mouthwash at least twice a day.
  • Keep an eye on your diet. Bet on a balanced diet and avoid snacking between meals.

And, of course, be sure to periodically visit your dentist to prevent and cure. It is important that you remember that a professional cleaning is a complement to a good oral health routine, and will help you brush the difficult areas that our daily brushing does not reach.
