The teething stage begins when the baby is 6 to 8 months old, normally children should have 20 baby teeth by 30 months of age. When babies are beginning the teething stage they begin to act in an irritable manner, biting objects, inflammation and tenderness in the gums, rejection of food and trouble sleeping.
How can these first teeth be protected?
- Constantly wipe the baby’s face with a cloth to remove saliva and prevent a rash.
- Give the baby a cold object to chew on, such as a firm rubber ring.
- Rub the gums with a cold, damp piece of cloth with a clean finger.
To decrease cavity-producing bacteria, parents can:
- Brush your teeth twice a day (after breakfast and before bedtime) from the first tooth.
- It is recommended to use a paste with fluoride, with 1000 to 1100 parts per million (ppm) of fluoride and in an amount similar to the size of a grain of rice.
