An oral extraction is a procedure in which a tooth is detached from the gum. This procedure is performed in case of not having the space for the correct positioning of the teeth, to correct severe crowding, to reunite the incisive front in cases of dentoalveolar protrusion or to compensate for maxillary bone discrepancies. It is also performed when a tooth has such an extensive caries lesion that it is no longer possible to rehabilitate it.

If you are about to perform a tooth or dental extraction, we leave you some tips that you can apply before and after it.

Preliminary care

First of all, we will talk about how you should prepare yourself before the procedure:

  • Rest a day before (try to sleep well).
  • If necessary, follow the antibiotic treatment prescribed by your dentist.
  • Go with a companion as the anesthesia can last a couple of hours after the procedure is finished.
  • Do not drink alcohol at least 2 days before, do not consume tobacco.
  • Inform your dentist if you are undergoing medical treatment.
  • And also the most important thing is to be calm.

Each point mentioned above is extremely important, since for a good recovery and a successful treatment it is necessary to be well prepared.

Aftercare

If you have already had a tooth extracted, you must take into account that you will present bleeding in the extraction area, this must be controlled by pressing with a gauze, biting it.

Other important suggestions are:

  • Eat foods that are easy to chew or mashed, and that are cold.
  • During the first 24 hours you should not spit or rinse.
  • What you eat should be cold or at room temperature. To prevent rebleeding.
  • The swelling could increase up to 72 hours after the extraction.
  • You must not smoke.
  • Brush the extraction area well after each meal with a soft toothbrush, in order to ensure that no food remains are retained in the alveolus.
  • Bruises or clots can be generated, it is completely normal.
  • Sleep with your head elevated. To avoid bleeding and pain.
